State television news monitored in Banjul on the evening of Monday 30th November, citing a release from the office of the president, has announced that the Deputy Chief of Staff, Brigadier General Yankuba Drammeh, has been demoted to the rank of private and dismissed from the army. What the news announcement failed to mention is if the recently promoted has been put under detention as have all the many military officers recently dismissed from the army. It was in October that Mr. Drammeh was made acting Deputy Chief of Staff after the dismissal of former Chief of Staff, Lang Tombong Tamba. Mr. Tamba himself has been under detention for about ten days now and The Gambia Journal has learnt, from competent sources, that he is being questioned over an alleged coup plot. After his dismissal, Mr. Tamba was replaced with Mr. Alkali Kinteh, who was then away on an overseas study trip and was being awaited by Mr. Drammeh.
