11 YEARS ANNIVERSARY  COMMEMORATION OF APRIL 10th AND 11th, 2000 STUDENT MASSACRE IN THE GAMBIA:

Today the United States based Gambians’ Movement for Democracy and Development (MDD) a Pro-Democracy, Human Rights and Justice Movement commemorates and mourns the events that happened on April 10th and 11th, 2000. This commemoration event of a great injustice offered an excellent opportunity to stress the importance of maintaining human rights and justice in The Gambia.

On April 10 and 11 year 2000 several unarmed, innocent student demonstrators were out to express their grievances in the tortured to death of a fellow student Ebrima Barry and rape of a school girl Binta when security forces under the directives of the President Yahya Jammeh and Vice President Isatou Njie Saidy respectively confronted them shot and killed 14 students and a Red Cross volunteer in broad daylight.

Names of the Victims: Reginald Carrol, Karamo Barrow, Lamin Bojang, Ousman Sabally, Sainey Nyabally, Ousman Sembene, Bakary Njie, Claesco Pierra, Momodou Lamin Njie, Wuyea Foday Mansareh, Bamba Jobarteh, Momodou Lamin Chune, Abdoulie Sanyang,  Babucarr Badjie and Omar Barrow.  Others sustained serious injuries and some of them have been maimed for the rest of their lives.

Section 25 of the Gambia Constitution reads: Every person shall have the right to – (a) freedom of speech and expression, which shall include freedom of the press and other media; (b) freedom of thought, conscience and belief, which include academic freedom; (c) freedom to practice any religion and to manifest such practice; (d) freedom to assemble and DEMONSTRATE peaceably and without arms; (e) freedom of association, which shall include freedom to form and join association and unions, including political parties and trade unions; (f) freedom to petition the executive for redress of grievances and to resort to the courts for the protection of his or her rights.

It‘s important for us to reflect upon the lives that were taken during this barbaric attack and to memorialize those who bravely stood for a great cause. Today marked eleven years since then and the future of The Gambia and its people continuous to be bleak. President Yahya Jammeh disregards for the Constitution of the country and his no sign of respect for The Gambian people.

We are here by express our disgust against the cold-blooded murder of these school children and Red Cross Volunteer. We condemn the blanket impunity that the self proclaimed President Yahya Jammeh accorded to those responsible for committing these heinous serious crimes.

We urge Gambians, and families of those victims to never forget or forgive about this incident and keep in mind justice is on the way.

We call on all genuine democratic Governments and human rights Organizations to take concrete steps to put an end to the continuous terror inflicted on Gambians by President Jammeh’s dictatorship.

Finally by remembering the atrocities of April 10 and 11, 2000, we take this opportunity to pray for the victims and pledge our solidarity with the families of the victims.

Note: Gambian Movement for Democracy and Development (MDD) is a USA based Nonpartisan Movement working to support the restoration of genuine Democracy and respect for human rights in The Gambia.
