GOVI Celebrates White Cane Day

GOVI, Gambian organization For The Visually Impaired on Sunday 13th October celebrated World White Cane Day. The marking of the day serves to promote recognition and respect for the cane used by the blind to be able to manage safely in traffic.The organization on Sunday afternoon stage a march from the West Field Junction to the GOVI headquarters at Kanifing South. Mamud Mburr Touray thanked the Department of State for Health and Social Welfare for assistance given for organizing the celebrations. He also called on drivers to show greater respect for the White Cane so as to help facilitate the right of blind people to be in the traffic. Mr. Alhagy Serigne Seck also called for greater recognition of the cane  National President Muhamed Cora urged for the stoping of discrimination against the blind and other disabled people. He said people should remember that visibility impaired do not mean mental disability. He said it should be recognized that blind people have families and have the same usual need for jobs and opportunities available to others.
