President Yahya Jammeh, distributed, on his behalf by Ismaila Sambou, minister for Local Government and Lands, fourteen new tractors for the expected “voluntary” work on his various farms, at a brief ceremony held at the State House in Banjul. The tractors are meant to help in the work being done on the president’s various farms in the Central River Region and the Upper River Region. Five tractors were handed over to Governor Omar Khan of the Upper River Region, URR; five to the Central River Region governor, Ganyie Touray; and four to the Green Youths of Central River Region.

IEC Annual Report Submitted

The IEC, Independent Electoral Commission, on Tuesday 31st March presented to the National Assembly its annual report for the year 2008.
The 1997 Constitution requires the IEC to submit its annual report, which covers all its activities, to the assembly. According to Chairman Mustapha Carrayol, dilated on the various activities his office embarked on during the course of the year such as trainings, seminars, attending international conferences and duties, among others.

Gambia- SA Sing Air Agreement

The Gambia and South Africa on Friday 9th May signed a bilateral air agreement that would allow air transport between the two countries. Officials of the South African embassy based in Dakar and senior officials of the Gambian Department of State foe Communication put pen on the agreement paper in a ceremony held at the Kairaba Beach hotel .Though agreements of such kind often come after long and difficult negotiations, observers told the Gambia Journal that this one was remarkably smooth and speedy. Currently The Gambia has no airline of its own equipped to exploit the opportunities of the agreement and many airlines have transferred to neighboring Dakar for safety and economic reasons.

With just few weeks to go before the start of the 2003/2006 tourist season paramilitary police have been making massive arrests of people found around the designated tourist areas in the Greater Banjul Area. Hundreds have been reported arrested between Wednesday Oct 4th and Sunday Oct 8th. All this is done in the name of fighting bumpsterism, a word coined by Gambians to describe the practice of mainly young adults who camp around hotels and other tourist resorts posing as professional “friends” in exchange for money.
