Gambia- SA Sing Air Agreement

The Gambia and South Africa on Friday 9th May signed a bilateral air agreement that would allow air transport between the two countries. Officials of the South African embassy based in Dakar and senior officials of the Gambian Department of State foe Communication put pen on the agreement paper in a ceremony held at the Kairaba Beach hotel .Though agreements of such kind often come after long and difficult negotiations, observers told the Gambia Journal that this one was remarkably smooth and speedy. Currently The Gambia has no airline of its own equipped to exploit the opportunities of the agreement and many airlines have transferred to neighboring Dakar for safety and economic reasons.

The UNHCR Banjul office has promised to distribute food supplies to refugees fleeing massively into The Gambia from the war-torn southern Senegalese province of Casamance. This was disclosed on Thursday September 28th by the Commission’s Chief of Mission Mr. Ron Mpanda. The disclosure was made following allegations that thousands of refugees, staying under difficult conditions in Foni’s and Kombo East districts, have been neglected by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

The fact is that the company is highly dysfunctional, inefficient and ridden with corruption. Because it generates lot of cash monthly, it attracts lot of Government attraction and often acts as a milking cow for the regime. Salaries of members of the Armed Forces, sources of funding political campaigns and all what not are often siphoned in from NAWEC’s financial resources. Widespread thievery of fuel, vehicle spare parts, cables, etc has been reported among the company’s staff.
